Estonia received around 1,500 British troops for Exercise Spring Storm 2026, one of the largest military activities held annually in the Baltic country.
The training took place less than 25 kilometers from the Russian border and included the participation of NATO forces and partner countries, reinforcing military cooperation in the region.
Among the equipment used were British Army Challenger 2 tanks, transported to the area of operations by specialized vehicles. The main battle group involved was formed by the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland, which simulated defensive operations in the face of a hypothetical invasion by a hostile neighboring country.
According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the exercise served to demonstrate the capability of NATO’s Forward Land Force, a structure created to keep multinational troops positioned on the alliance’s northern and eastern flanks. The training also made it possible to assess armored vehicle mobility, coordination between international units, and the establishment of command centers in an operational environment.

The British presence in Estonia is part of Operation Cabrit, launched in 2017 in response to rising tensions in the region following the annexation of Crimea. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, NATO has expanded its reinforcement plans for Eastern Europe, and exercises such as Spring Storm are considered essential to ensure that additional forces can be deployed quickly in the event of a crisis.
